Bold colours wrapping warm beech-wood is what defines this ergonomically-designed salt grinder. Like a small colourful sculpture in the middle of your dining table. Philippe Starck

Juicy Salif was born on a pizzeria placemat on Capraia, a small Tuscan island, when Starck, after squeezing a lemon onto a plate of squid, sketched a series of splashes, at first resembling the shellfish and then increasingly abstract. From mollusk to icon, the step is short. The placemat arrives at Alessi, where the project creates excitement. Among the early versions studied, one sports a spiral fluted head, sculptural but ineffective: the fruit remains intact. Testing dictates a compromise between form and function, one that Starck finds in the version finally put into production.
